COWDRAY Park councillor Ntandoyenkosi Ndlovu has urged residents to desist from digging wells in their yards saying it poses a health risk.
Many residents in the city are digging backyard wells in response to the acute water shortages rocking the city.
Ndlovu told Southern Eye that digging wells in yards poses a significant risk as it led to contamination of underground water.
“While our mandate as a city is to provide clean, potable water through taps, we are aware that the prolonged water-shedding has led residents to digging wells,” he said.
“This poses significant safety risks, as underground water can be contaminated and open wells are dangerous, especially for children.
“In response to these challenges, we provide water using bowsers to ensure residents have access to safe water during prolonged outages. We strongly advise against digging wells and urge residents to rely on the provided water sources to ensure safety and health.”
Ndlovu added that the local authority was committed to improving water infrastructure and ensuring consistent access to clean water for all residents.
