Robbers steal US$21k from Mukuru

Three unidentified armed robbers on Wednesday stormed a Mukuru money transfer agent in Gweru and got away with more than US$21 000 and R14 000, police confirmed.

"Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating an armed robbery of cash amounting to US$21 544 and 14 400 South African Rand from a Mukuru money transfer agent shop at Mkoba 6 shopping centre in Gweru on June 19 at around 7.30am,” Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said.

"On the fateful day the company's employees Munyaradzi Nhuruza (35) and Lincoln Nyachowa aged (33) arrived at their workplace.

"There unknown men stormed the shop and one of them allegedly dragged Nyachowa and force marched him towards the safe where his colleague was counting money."

Mahoko said one of the assailants produced a pistol before ordering the two employees to surrender all the money they were counting and to open the safe box.

He said the suspects proceeded to order the victims to lie down and robbed them of the money before they ran away from the scene.

A report was made at ZRP Mkoba police station and investigations are underway.

Mahoko appealed to members of the public who might have information about the robbers to report at any nearest police station.

He however urged members of the business community to employ tight security measures at their premises and avoid keeping large sums of money.

In recent months, there have been increased reports of armed robberies at money transfer agents in the province.
