The Bulawayo Vendors and Traders Association (BVTA) scooped two awards during the 13th edition of Non-Governmental Organisation Directors’ Annual Summer Retreat held in Victoria Falls on Tuesday.
BVTA won the Community Development Non-Governmental Organisation of the Year award and the Best Practice and Innovation award for Informal Traders Insurance Scheme by Citizen Engagement for Accountability Activity (CEAA).
BVTA director Michael Ndiweni said the awards were “a testimony of our collective efforts as an organisation to impact and change lives”.
“They demonstrate our commitment towards ensuring that we find solutions to problems that are faced in our communities, beyond demanding, and also proffering alternatives. The award on innovation demonstrates our ability to finding solutions to unique problems that are faced by our constituency, our members and informal traders,” Ndiweni said.
“The second award demonstrates our ability to show or model solutions on challenges that are faced by our members, particularly challenges around access to workplaces, inhibiting policies and pieces of legislation, and access to information.”
Ndiweni extended his gratitude to stakeholders for supporting the organisation.
“These awards are a huge sign for stakeholders’ trust in us and belief in our efforts and perhaps the indelible journey that the organisation has walked over the past eight years.”
BVTA is currently co-ordinating the construction of a vegetable market in Nkulumane high-density suburb where producers will be able to rent stalls to sell their produce.
