Gweru mayor Martin Chivhoko says the council wants to raise at least US$50 000 to cheer up the underprivileged during the festive season.
Speaking at the launch of the Mayors’ Christmas Cheer Fund last week, Chivhoko appealed to the corporates and other stakeholders to assist.
"I wish to extend my profound gratitude to all those who make donations towards helping the less privileged over the years," he said.
"I want to take this opportunity to also call upon the business community to take up social responsibility through education aid by paying school fees for students to the level where they can stand on their feet."
Several local companies and individuals attended the event and managed to raise over US$4 000 at the launch.
Fundraising committee chairperson Prisca Chard said various fundraising activities such as a golf tournament and marathon have been lined up for early December.
