THREE trade unionists who were arrested last week for protesting against “slave wages” at two of Bulawayo’s leading retail outlets have been granted $50 000 bail each.
Last Danga Muzondo (59), Dzimudzi Feremba (52) and Kholwani Tshuma (50) were not asked to plead to charges of participating in a gathering with intent to promote public violence.
The three, represented by Jabulani Mhlanga from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, appeared before magistrate Nomagugu Maphosa who remanded them to June 19.
They are leaders of the Private Security Workers Union.
Allegations against the three are that they chanted songs with the lyrics Intoyenzayo siyayizonda loosely translated to mean “We despise what you are doing” during a protest outside OK Zimbabwe supermarket and an N Richards Group wholesale demanding fair wages.
It is the State case that this conduct constitutes a breach of peace, security or order of the public.
Maphosa ordered them to continue residing at their given residential addresses, not interfere with witnesses and investigations and to report at their respective police stations once a week.
