IOM, government deepen migration cooperation

Zimbabwe has moved to deepen cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) as the country prepares for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA18).

The development follows a meeting between the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Taonga Mushayavanhu, and IOM Director Peter Liljert, where the two sides discussed ongoing cooperation, opportunities to strengthen collaboration and joint initiatives on the international agenda.

Mushayavanhu said the meeting provided an opportunity for Zimbabwe and IOM to assess existing areas of cooperation while identifying new opportunities to advance their shared objectives.

“Zimbabwe attached importance to its partnership with the UN migration agency, particularly in strengthening cooperation on issues that have implications for development, international peace and security and the welfare of migrants.

We discussed ongoing cooperation between Zimbabwe and IOM and opportunities to deepen our collaboration,” Mushayavanhu added in a statement.

“Part of our discussions focused on joint efforts ahead of the UNGA81 High-Level Week. Zimbabwe seeks to use its engagements during the high-level week to advance constructive multilateral cooperation.”

The ambassador said the engagement with IOM was particularly significant as Zimbabwe continues to serve on the UN Security Council, where it is participating in discussions on matters affecting international peace and security.

“The cooperation with international organisations such as IOM would help Zimbabwe contribute more effectively to global discussions. We also discussed joint efforts during Zimbabwe’s tenure on the UN Security Council.”
