Mutare, Aug. 4 (NewsDay Live) — Opposition MP for Mutare Central, Brian James has dismissed social media reports claiming he has resigned from Parliament.
James had previously threatened to resign in protest against the Constitutional Amendment Act No. 3 (CAA 3), which he voted against but has since become law.
Speaking to NewsDay Live, the former Mutare mayor dismissed the speculation.
“I have not resigned from Parliament; that is not true. I am here to stay, and I will continue to serve my people,” James said.
“I will continue to engage my constituency. That is all I can say at the moment.”
James has been one of the most vocal critics of CAA 3, describing it as anti-progress and alleging that some legislators were bribed to support the constitutional changes.
Several MPs from both Zanu PF and the opposition, including those aligned to Sengezo Tshabangu, reportedly received vehicles and cash from businessman and philanthropist Wicknell Chivayo, although no evidence has been publicly produced linking the gifts to their parliamentary vote.
CAA 3 extends the terms of President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the current Parliament by an additional two years, allowing both to remain in office until 2030.
