Mutare teacher arrested over fake jobs scam

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has arrested a Mutare teacher accused of defrauding two women of US$1,100 through a bogus teacher recruitment scheme.

Melline Chirinda, a teacher at St. Joseph’s High School, was arrested on May 28 and faces two counts of fraud.

According to ZACC, Chirinda allegedly misrepresented to Mercylyn Gonouya and Hellen Mutseyangwa that she had connections within the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and could secure teaching posts for them.

Prosecutors allege that between January 2025 and January 2026, Chirinda received US$550 from each complainant in exchange for the promised jobs.

ZACC said Chirinda later became evasive when the promised employment failed to materialize, prompting the complainants to report the matter to the anti-graft body.

Following investigations, Chirinda was arrested and appeared before the Mutare Magistrates’ Court.

She was granted bail of US$100 and remanded to June 15, 2026.

The case comes amid ongoing warnings from authorities about employment scams targeting job seekers, particularly those seeking positions in the public sector.
