Romania backs Zimbabwe’s UNSC bid

Romania has endorsed Zimbabwe’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term, giving fresh momentum to Harare’s diplomatic campaign and re-engagement drive.

The endorsement followed high-level engagements in Bucharest by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, Amon Murwira, who was dispatched as Special Envoy of President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

“I presented my letters of appointment requesting support for Zimbabwe’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term. They expressed their support, and we are very elated that our diplomatic outreach is yielding results,” said Murwira in an interview.

He said the engagements were helping strengthen Zimbabwe’s international standing while advancing the Government’s “friend to all, enemy to none” and “Open for Business” foreign policy approach.

“These engagements are strengthening Zimbabwe’s international footprint and consolidating our engagement and re-engagement policy,” he said.

Beyond the UNSC campaign, discussions between the two nations centred on expanding cooperation in key sectors such as education, science and technology, agriculture, trade, and industrial development.

“We discussed issues of mutual interest, including science and technology, education, and trade in agriculture, as well as setting up industrial plants in Zimbabwe,” said Murwira.

He added that Romania’s expertise in the automotive industry presents significant opportunities for investment and industrial collaboration.

“Romania is very advanced in the automotive sector, and this opens avenues for possible investment partnerships that can support Zimbabwe’s industrialisation drive,” he said.

The two countries are also moving to deepen bilateral relations through stronger diplomatic representation, with Zimbabwe set to accredit its ambassador in Germany to Romania.

“We are also working on enhancing diplomatic representation and establishing a Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation to deepen relations between our two countries,” Murwira said.

Romania’s endorsement adds to growing international backing for Zimbabwe’s UNSC bid as Harare intensifies engagement and re-engagement efforts across Europe and beyond.
