Timba Launches ‘One Million Voices for the Constitution’ Campaign Against Amendment Bill

Jameson Timba

HARARE, Mar. 16 (NewsDay Live) — Opposition politician Jameson Timba and his Defend the Constitution Platform (DCP) have launched a nationwide campaign dubbed “One Million Voices for the Constitution”, aimed at mobilising one million signatures against the controversial Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3.

The initiative seeks to rally citizens, civic groups and political actors to petition against the proposed legislation, which critics say could alter key provisions of Constitution of Zimbabwe and weaken democratic safeguards.

Addressing a press conference in Harare on Monday afternoon, Timba said the campaign was designed to amplify public opposition to the Bill and defend constitutionalism by giving Zimbabweans a direct platform to express their views on the proposed changes.

“Government argues that constitutional amendments are necessary for stability and continuity,” Timba said.

“Zimbabweans are asking a simple question: continuity of what?”

Timba said the signature drive would be conducted nationwide through community engagements and partnerships with civic groups, with the aim of presenting the petition as evidence of widespread public concern over the proposed amendments.

The campaign comes amid growing debate among legal experts, civil society organisations and political actors over the implications of Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 for Zimbabwe’s governance framework.
