Zim scholar earns two doctorates

Caroline Makoni

A ZIMBABWEAN scholar has brought global acclaim to Zimbabwe by earning two doctoral degrees simultaneously, graduating with the highest distinction of Summa Cum Laude.

Academic Caroline Makoni was awarded a Doctor of Business Administration in Strategic Leadership from the Chartered Institute of Management and Leadership (CIML), alongside a second doctorate from the University of California.

She was also recognised with the title of Overall Best Student of 2025 by CIML.

Her groundbreaking research tackles a critical national issue: strengthening local technical skills through structured knowledge transfer from expatriates.

Focusing on Zimbabwe’s emerging oil and gas sector, her work provides actionable solutions to counter the skills shortage exacerbated by the country’s prolonged brain drain.

The study offers evidence-based, policy-relevant frameworks designed to enhance firm performance and boost national competitiveness in strategic industries.

Emphasising the need for an integrated approach, Makoni called for stronger collaboration between academia, industry and government ministries.

She specifically highlighted the role of the Skills Audit and Development ministry, the Energy and Power Development ministry and the Higher and Tertiary Education ministry in ensuring sustainable human capital development.

Researchers said her outstanding accomplishment underscored the depth of Zimbabwe’s intellectual capital and reinforced the pivotal role of advanced education and targeted skills development as foundational pillars for the nation’s socio-economic growth.
