ALPHA Media Holdings (AMH) was yesterday honoured for giving a supporting hand to the voiceless and marginalised in the country.
AMH, publishers of NewsDay, The Standard, Zimbabwe Independent, was recognised at a fundraising event for the St Giles Medical Rehabilitation Centre in Harare.
St Giles is a non-governmental organisation involved in the rehabilitation of physically disabled people.
AMH also runs online Heart & Soul TV.
St Giles thanked AMH for its “generosity and unwavering support over the years” during a fundraising event to support the refurbishment of the institution’s children’s hostel with the goal of creating a safer and more comfortable environment.
“You built us, strengthened us and walked alongside in our journey of rebuilding lives. For all that you have done, we remain grateful,” the certificate of appreciation read in part.
During the fundraising event, Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga’s wife, Miniyothabo Baloyi, pledged US$5 000 towards the refurbishment.
“Together, let us pledge to stand with St Giles, give these children a future and remind them that they are not forgotten,” she said.

Baloyi appreciated the corporates and well-wishers who stepped forward to support the centre.
“We all know that in today’s environment, donor funding is shrinking and foreign aid is withdrawing,” she said.
“Yet even in this challenging space, corporates and well-wishers like you have stepped forward as heroes for children and families whose lives depend on the services St Giles
provides.”
Baloyi acknowledged the challenges faced by St Giles, which is home to children with diverse neurological conditions.
“This hostel has been struggling for years ... facing the threat of closure if resources continue to fall short,” she said.
“Their conditions may be non-progressive, but their need for care never diminishes ... This aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, which remind us that development must be inclusive, non-discriminatory and must reach those who are most vulnerable first.”
St Giles acting chief executive Abel Mazire said the institution was appealing for US$15 000 to cover essential expenses such as water and electricity, as well as contribute to a scholarship fund and the hostel refurbishment.
“Every dollar, every penny ... helps us to restore, for the future, one child at a time,” he said.
“So your support over the years has made us thrive through turbulent times, giving children hope for a better and brighter
future.”
