A Harare magistrate on Tuesday remanded to August 15 the cases where Zimbabwe Independent editor Faith Zaba and Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) are facing charges of insulting President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Zaba, who was arrested on July 1 on charges of “undermining or insulting the authority of the president” in connection with the popular Muckraker column, and AMH represented by editor in chief, Kholwani Nyathi, appeared separately before magistrate Ruth Moyo.
Prosecutor Takudzwa Jambawu asked for the cases to be remanded to another date where an application would be made to consolidate the two dockets.
Jambawu said investigations into both cases were complete.
The state alleged that the Muckraker column published on June 27 titled “When we become a mafia state’ and cited Zimbabwe’s alleged interference in the politics of neighbouring countries and that the government was “obsessed with keeping itself in power” was meant to engender feelings of hostility towards Mnangagwa.
At a previous hearing, Moyo rejected an application by AMH lawyer Chris Mhike for refusal of remand.
On Tuesday, both AMH and Zaba were represented by Nontokozo Dube-Tachiona from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights.
AMH are the publishers of NewsDay, Zimbabwe Independent, The Standard and Southern Eye as well as proprietors of HStv radio.
