CIO agent faces rape charge

A CENTRAL Intelligence Organisation (CIO) officer based in Gweru has been granted US$200 bail in a case in which he is being accused of raping a 20-year-old woman.

A CENTRAL Intelligence Organisation (CIO) officer based in Gweru has been granted US$200 bail in a case in which he is being accused of raping a 20-year-old woman.

The agent, Makopa Manyadze (45), was not asked to plead before he was remanded in custody pending bail application ruling when he appeared before Gweru regional magistrate Christopher Maturure last week.

Maturure granted him bail.

The magistrate said the State had failed to show why Manyadze was not a proper candidate for bail despite facing a serious charge.

The magistrate said bail was a constitutional right which could be granted even in serious cases, albeit with stringent conditions.

Manyadze was ordered to stay at his given address in Gweru  and not to interfere with witnesses.

The matter was postponed to July 22 for trial.

According to court papers, on Monday last week in the morning, the complainant was at home alone in Kopje suburb, Gweru, when Manyadze, who had earlier instructed her to take a bath, arrived at her residence.

He allegedly entered the house and ordered the complainant to come closer to him, but she refused.

Manyadze allegedly grabbed her by the waist and fondled her breasts.

Further allegations are that Manyadze threw the complainant onto a bed and continued to fondle her breasts, stomach and thighs after overpowering her.

The State alleges that Manyadze then forcibly undressed the complainant and raped her.

The matter was reported to the police by the complainant’s mother after the victim informed her twin sister.

The nature of relationship the complainant had with the suspect was not revealed.
