Adopt holistic stance to cybersecurity, ICT professionals urged

INFORMATION and Communication Technology

INFORMATION and Communication Technology  (ICT) experts have emphasized the need for treating cybersecurity as an overall organizational issue, rather than just an IT department concern.

ICT practitioners and stakeholders from local and international entities are currently gathered in Kariba for the Computer Society of Zimbabwe's (CSZ) winter school.

The event, themed "Building Cyber Resilience: Data Protection in the Face of Evolving Threats", is a capacity-building programme on cyber security, digital forensics, and robotic process automation among other ICT-related issues.

"When we talk about data protection, it's easy for us to focus on technology, to focus on the products, whether it's software or hardware products but we must approach it in a holistic manner, looking at the people, the processes, and the products themselves,"  event guest of and Adept Solutions chief executive officer, Wellington Nheta said on Wednesday.

"This conversation of cybersecurity needs not only to be an IT issue, but to start from the boardrooms (and) being an overall organizational issue because at the end of the day, business depends on such information to make decisions and unlock value for itself."

CSZ president, Freddy Ndlovu highlighted the critical role that cyber resilience plays in ensuring the security of digital assets.

"Cyber resilience is what ensures that our data, our identities, and our infrastructure remains secure in the face of adversity.

"But, resilience is not built overnight. So it requires investment, integrity in policy, and most importantly, in people," he said.

Ndlovu urged attendees to continue pushing boundaries, remaining vigilant, and upholding the highest standards of ethical responsibility as their work "underpins the security of our networks, the integrity of our data, and the confidence of our citizens".
