Man seizes cop’s gun during land dispute

The accused, Garikai Chirambadare, appeared before Harare provincial magistrate Ruth Moyo, who remanded him in custody to today pending bail application.

A RUWA man appeared in court yesterday facing a charge of public violence over a land dispute at Cloverdale Farm in the area recently.

The accused, Garikai Chirambadare, appeared before Harare provincial magistrate Ruth Moyo, who remanded him in custody to today pending bail application.

He is being charged under section 36(1)(a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23] for allegedly participating in acts of public violence.

State prosecutor Nomsa Kangara alleged that the crime was committed on May 16 this year.

She alleged that Chirambadare and other illegal settlers resisted lawful eviction from the farm, which was being effected under High Court Order HCH2294/24.

The eviction team included Deputy Sheriff, Police Reaction Group, Duty Uniform Branch, Support Unit and Canine Unit.

Chirambadare and others allegedly barricaded the Harare-Mutare Highway using wooden logs, burning tyres and dug trenches to make the farm inaccessible.

When police attempted to disperse the group, the settlers allegedly resisted, leading to a commotion that caused traffic jam on the highway.

Police reportedly used teargas to disperse the crowd, during which some officers were injured.

Chirambadare is accused of seizing a gun from a police officer during the chaos and fleeing the scene.
