HARARE, Apr.16 (NewsDayLive) - A groundbreaking initiative, the Digital Democracy Initiative Hackathon, is set to kick off virtually next month to help participants develop technology-driven solutions aimed at enhancing democracy across sub-Saharan Africa.
The hackathon will focus on empowering citizens, particularly women, youth, and marginalized groups, who often face limited access to resources in their pursuit of democratic rights.
Participants, who will include innovators, developers, activists, and community leaders, will be expected to brainstorm on critical issues such as disinformation, censorship, and the protection of civil liberties in the digital era.
In a statement, the event organisers Magamba Network said the initiative provides resources on data privacy, accessibility, and collaborative tools to bridge the information gap between citizens and government officials.
“The hackathon challenges participants to create and implement innovative digital tools that enable citizens to independently monitor public services and advocate for transparency from elected officials,” the organisers said.
They added that the platform will provide for development off holistic strategies that marry digital security and activism to protect the vital work of civil society actors operating under repression, and to address the pressing threats of disinformation and low digital literacy by creating cutting-edge tools such as AI-driven fact-checking applications and interactive digital literacy programmes.
