THE National Democratic Working Group (NDWG) has warned the ruling Zanu PF party against pushing for a constitutional amendment to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term in office beyond 2028.
The group said it would not succumb to Zanu PF arm-twisting tactics to silence it as they had strengthened the inclusive movement to make the bold declaration.
Members of NDWG were recently attacked while holding a consultative meeting in Mutasa district, Manicaland province, over a Zanu PF resolution.
The ruling party passed the resolution during a national people’s conference held in Bulawayo last year in October, with its activists campaigning for a constitutional amendment to extend Mnangagwa’s tenure to 2030.
Mnangagwa this week said he would step down in 2028 and let Zanu PF and the country move on.
However, addressing the media in Harare yesterday, NDWG northern region facilitator Wurayayi Zembe said the group was in agreement with progressive forces opposed to the agenda.
“We announce our position, which has been endorsed by progressive war veterans led by Cdes Blessed Bombshell Geza and Knox Chivero. The messages being spoken out by Geza and Chivero resonate with the National Democratic Working Group position from the onset,” he said.
“We stand firm in mutual solidarity with each other and we reassure them that we stand together high and low in this people's democratic struggle.

“The position as amplified by Geza and Chivero, is the position of the masses of our people who are eager to see the completion of the mass democratic revolution in Zimbabwe. The revolution is upon us, fellow compatriots.”
He called on churches, students, civil society organisations, workers and the masses to stand firm in support of the position.
