HARARE, Feb 14 (NewsDay Live) - Two suspected smugglers on Wednesday abandoned R3 million worth of locally made Remmington Gold cigarettes at Marble Hall, some 360km from the Beitbridge border, South African Police Service (Saps) said yesterday.
The cigarettes are suspected to have been smuggled through Zimbabwe’s heavily guarded Beitbridge border post.
“Police in Marble Hall in Sekhukhune together with private Security recovered a truck loaded with 89 boxes (50 cartoons) and 716x20 of Remington Gold illicit cigarettes worth R3 million, after two male suspects abandoned them at corner N11 and Slaagboom road, in Marble Hall policing area,” Saps said in a statement.
“Police activated an operation upon receiving an alert about a suspicious truck travelling towards Marble Hall. The described vehicle was spotted, and they tactically approached it.
“The driver and passenger jumped out of the truck, after noticing the Police. They abandoned the truck and fled the scene on foot.”
Police searched the truck and found the illicit Remington Gold cigarettes at the estimated street value of R3 million and they were all confiscated.
Police have since launched a search for the suspects, Saps said.
