Magistrate fined US$400 for causing fatal accident

The court heard that Chokuda applied emergency brakes after noticing a herd of cattle crossing the road, causing the bus to overturn.

MASVINGO, Feb 12 (NewsDayLive) - Local magistrate Tavengwa Timeon Makunde has been fined US$400 for culpable homicide after he ran over and killed a pupil along the Harare- Masvingo Highway.

The court ruled that Tavengwa acted negligently resulting in the accident.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed the ruling, saying the fatal accident happened on November 22, 2023 along the Harare-Masvingo Highway.

"The child died on the spot from head injuries. Investigations revealed that the accident occurred in clear daylight on a wide tarred road."

Meanwhile, a CAG  bus driver has been banned from driving heavy vehicles for two years after being involved in a road accident that left 17 passengers injured along the Harare-Chirundu Road on September 17, 2024.

Thomas Chokuda (49) from Norton was sentenced to either a US$300 fine or three months in prison after he was found guilty of negligent driving by a Karoi magistrate. 

The court heard that Chokuda applied emergency brakes after noticing a herd of cattle crossing the road, causing the bus to overturn.
