HARARE, Feb 10 (NewsDayLive) - Magistrate Taurai Manuwere has sentenced a gardener from Greendale Avenue to eight years in jail for stealing US$70 000 from his employer, before returning part of the loot 11 months later.
Collin Mubvumbi (43) will effectively serve three years after two years were suspended on condition of good behavior, with a further three years suspended on condition that he pays restitution to his former employer identified as Chakanyuka Nyatanga.
Prosecutor Kuda Muza told the court that Mubvumbi worked at Nyatanga's house as a gardener from 2013 up to September 2024, and had access to his employer's bedroom.
Sometime in November 2023, Nyatanga left US$70 000 hidden in a fitted wardrobe in the main bedroom. Mubvumbi entered the bedroom, unscrewed part of the fitted wardrobe and stole the money.
He later returned part of the money 11 months later claiming that he was being haunted by strange dreams.
