ZIMBABWE’S Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture has received international recognition from the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations under the FISH4ACP Countries project.
The recognition is a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to develop its fisheries and aquaculture sector, which is critical to improving food and nutrition security.
The FISH4ACP project is a five-year initiative that aims to support sustainable fisheries and aquaculture development in African, Caribbean and Pacific countries.
The project seeks to promote investments in fisheries and aquaculture value chains, with the goal of stimulating inclusive growth, reducing poverty and improving food and nutrition security.
The recent National Aquaculture Sector Survey Results Dissemination workshop, held in Kadoma, highlighted the importance of the fisheries and aquaculture sector in Zimbabwe’s food security strategy.
The workshop brought together stakeholders from financial institutions, private sector suppliers and government officials to discuss the survey’s findings and the way forward for Zimbabwe’s aquaculture sector.
Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture director, Milton Tinashe Makumbe said the country’s fisheries and aquaculture sector had the potential to contribute significantly to the country’s food security and economic development.
“This recognition shows we are on the right track. Accurate data has been key to our success,” Makumbe said.
