Cops jailed for US$5,5K extortion

Panavanhu further suspended nine months on condition that the duo performs community service at Seke North Clinic for 24 weeks.

HARARE, Feb 6 (NewsDay Live) - TWO police officers stationed at Harare Central Police Station were yesterday convicted for extortion involving US$5 500.

Tsitsi Mapako and Moment Maponde were jointly charged with Robson Soma when they appeared before Harare magistrate Rufaro Panavanhu.

Mapako (29) was initially slapped with an 18-month imprisonment five months of which were suspended for five years on condition that she will not be involved in extortion again.

Panavanhu also suspended five months on conditions that Mapako repays the US$5 500 before March 3 this year.

The remaining months were commuted to 315 hours of community service at Seke North Clinic.

Meanwhile, Panavanhu sentenced Soma (45) and Maponde (33) to 14 months in jail with five months suspended on condition that the duo does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.

Panavanhu further suspended nine months on condition that the duo performs community service at Seke North Clinic for 24 weeks.

Prosecutor Dzidzai Josiah told the court that on April 21, 2021, the trio went to the complainant’s workplace and arrested her for fraud.

According to court documents, the trio interviewed the complainant, who told it that the person involved in the fraud case was already in custody.

The cops are said to have exerted pressure on the complainant demanding US$5 500 for her to be released.

The court heard that the complainant eventually complied and paid the cops US$5 500 through Mapako and was released

The complainant later made a report to the police, leading to the trio’s arrest.
