HARARE, Jan 30 (NewsDay Live) - GOVERNMENT has removed value-added tax (VAT) on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG gas) from the start of the year.
Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion minister Mthuli Ncube made the announcement through Statutory Instrument 195 of 2024 on Thursday.
“The removal of VAT is meant to give relief to citizens who are using LPG gas as a source of energy,” he said.
“The intention was to lower the prices of LPG gas by the extent of the VAT that was being charged previously.”
Ncube said government had noted with concern that “some of the LPG operators have not reduced their prices”, thus profiteering from the VAT relief which was aimed at citizens, adding that this was “unethical”.
“On January 7, 2025, ZERA [Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority] issued a public statement expressing precisely the maximum prices to be charged by LPG gas operators after the removal of VAT. However, these prices have not been adhered to,” Ncube said.
“I, therefore, urge LPG operators to reduce their prices by the extent of the VAT relief as intended.
“This will go a long way in giving relief to our consumers and citizens and is also consistent with government efforts towards greening the economy.”
