Embrace technologies to protect environment

ENVIRONMENT, Climate and Wildlife minister Sithembiso Nyoni

ENVIRONMENT, Climate and Wildlife minister Sithembiso Nyoni has urged industry stakeholders to adopt advanced technologies for environmental protection.

She made the remarks at the ESG Network Zimbabwe’s (ESGNZ) annual awards held in Harare Friday l.

ESGNZ is a Zimbabwean entity operating as the national network for enviromental social and governance (ESG) and sustainability.

Its mandate is to have ESG incorporated in the corporate agenda and contribute towards sustainable socio-economic development in Zimbabwe.

Speaking at the awards, Nyoni said there was a need to enhance processes with newer technologies to protect the environment.

“This approach towards alternative technologies is crucial for effective pollution control,” Nyoni said.

“I see my role as a minister as one that encompasses the legislative and regulatory framework of the business sector. The business community has a significant opportunity to impact future generations positively.”

She implored stakeholders to join their efforts in innovative approaches to contribute to a sustainable environment.

“In promoting CSR [corporate social responsibility] and ESG practices in Zimbabwe, our nation is home to a thriving business community that recognises the importance of giving back to society and protecting the environment,” Nyoni said.

“We have seen remarkable progress from initiatives in education, healthcare and infrastructure development, environmental conservation and community empowerment.”

Speaking at the same event, ESGNZ executive director Willard Razawo said there was a need for the government and private sector to continue working together to attain an enabling ESG environment.

“Our award winners tonight have demonstrated exceptional leadership, commitment and innovation in their ESG practices. They have shown that it is possible to balance economic growth with social responsibility and environmental stewardship,” he said.

“As we look to the future, I am excited about the prospects for ESG in Zimbabwe. We have a unique opportunity to leverage ESG principles to drive sustainable development, create jobs and improve the quality of life for all Zimbabweans."

To achieve this vision, he called on the government, business, civil society and individuals to work towards an enabling environment that supported creating ESG.

He said ESG practices were a journey that required joint efforts.

“It requires continuous learning, innovation, and improvement. As ESG Network Zimbabwe, we remain committed to supporting this journey. We will continue to provide a platform for knowledge sharing, collaboration, and innovation,” Razawo said.

Among the notable winners were Geo Pomona, Zimplats, Bikita Minerals, Kamativi Company, National Building Society and National Foods.
