Zim officials vie for top AU Commission posts

Basera is among six other candidates from central and southern African countries vying for the position.

FOUR Zimbabweans have been shortlisted for senior leadership positions in the African Union (AU) Commission, which acts as the executive branch or secretariat of the continental body.

According to a combined list for the senior leadership of the AU Commission, Local Government and Public Works permanent secretary John Basera is running for commissioner of agriculture, rural development, blue economy and sustainable development.

Basera is among six other candidates from central and southern African countries vying for the position.

These include Botswana, Burundi, Congo, Eswatini and Mozambique.

Rofina Ndakaziwa Tsingo is also among seven candidates vying for the position of commissioner of economic development, trade, tourism, industry and minerals.

Other contenders in the running include candidates from Equatorial Guinea, Malawi, Mozambique and three candidates from Central African countries.

Zesa Holdings stakeholders relations general manager George Manyaya has been nominated for commissioner of infrastructure and energy.

Agness Mahomva, a specialist public health physician, is also vying for the commissioner of health, humanitarian affairs and social development.

The elections will take place in February next year during the African Union Summit.

The chairperson’s role is reportedly reserved for a representative from East Africa to replace Mohamed Faki, a veteran politician from Chad, who has served since 2017.

According to a statement released by the board in May this year, aspiring candidates were required to submit to their Heads of State their curriculum vitae along with vision statements outlining how they intend to advance the transformative agenda of the AU, while addressing the existing and emerging challenges facing the continent.
