Robber fatally shoots Zvishavane shop owner

The armed robber forced the employee to direct him to Hwahwa’s place and claimed he had information that the now-deceased had cash received from a savings club, popularly known as mukando.

A ZVISHAVANE-BASED shop owner was shot dead over club savings by a robber.

Police have since launched an investigation into the callous murder of Mercy Hwahwa (42), who was brutally killed on December 13, 2023 at a house in Maglas, Zvishavane.

Reports are that an unknown suspect, who was armed with an unidentified pistol and wearing a face mask, accosted Hwahwa’s employee who was on her way to her employer’s residence to hand over money realised from daily sales.

The armed robber forced the employee to direct him to Hwahwa’s place and claimed he had information that the now-deceased had cash received from a savings club, popularly known as mukando.

“When the suspect arrived at the house, he demanded cash from Mercy Hwahwa, who denied having any, and then shot her in the head with a pistol,” national police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said in a statement last night.

“The suspect stole an undisclosed amount of (local) cash, two cellphones and US$100 realised from daily sales at the shop.”

Hwahwa was taken to Zvishavane Hospital where she died upon admission.

Nyathi urged people who might have information to contact the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp on 0712 800 197 or report at any nearest police station.
