Police investigate Nash Paint inferno

Workers assess the damage done by the fire at the Nash Paints plant in Graniteside, Harare

POLICE are investigating the cause of an inferno that destroyed paint manufacturing and distribution giant Nash Paints’ factory in Graniteside, Harare.

National police spokesperson, Paul Nyathi, said the fire damaged raw materials and plant equipment worth over US$1.1 million.

The fire occurred at around 3am on Thursday.

“Yes, we are investigating the cause of the fire but we can only share details next week,” Nyathi said.

Nash Paints executive chairman, Tinashe Mutarisi, told NewsDay that a forensics team visited the factory for investigations.

“We don’t know what started the fire and I am not suspecting any foul play at all,” Mutarisi said.

“The fire brigade responded promptly and saved a lot of things when it was alerted about this inferno.

“The fire-fighters arrived between 10 to 20 minutes and they came prepared. They acted very professionally and did a great job,”

“It’s something I felt that I should say because most of the time there are reports that fire-fighters arrive late and without water. They came and stopped the fire.”
