AT least two Zimbabweans, a man and his son, are reportedly among those who died in a gas tanker explosion in Boksburg suburb, Johannesburg, South Africa (SA), on Christmas Eve.
The death toll from the explosion has now risen to 18.
The father and son are said to be of the Vushendibaba family; although it was yet to be established yesterday from which part of Zimbabwe they hailed from.
Audrey Vushendibaba, the widow of the deceased, who was injured, hospitalised and discharged said she would give a detailed interview after attending to officials from the Zimbabwe embassy in SA who visited her on Tuesday afternoon.
Earlier on the same day, officials from the Gauteng Department of Social Development, including Mbali Hlophe, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and City of Ekurhuleni executive mayor Tania Campbell visited the Vushendibaba home to pay their respects.
The daughter is still hospitalised. On Tuesday, SA President Cyril Ramaphosa promised to support people affected by the blast.
The explosion tore off the roof of the Tambo Memorial Hospital, destroyed two houses, several cars and injured bystanders up to 500 metres from the blast.
The vehicle caught fire under a low bridge. The driver of the truck has been arrested on suspicion of culpable homicide, SA police said.
