ZIMBABWE Wikimedians recently launched the Wiki Loves Africa photography competition, running under the theme From Farm to Plate, aimed at documenting and celebrating the country’s agricultural practices, food traditions and culinary culture.
Speaking to NewsDay Life & Style, Zimbabwe Wikimedians co-ordinator Sichelesile Similo Ndlovu said Wiki Loves Africa is a photographic contest among African countries.
“We are taking pictures to tell our story from the farms to the food we eat in Zimbabwe. Though it’s a contest, we are saying let’s also tell our story on how we do it in Zimbabwe,” Ndlovu said.
“The contest started on March 1 and it is stretching to April 31. We are inviting everyone to take part: photographers, food enthusiasts or anyone who is interested.
“This is an African contest but we are going to tell it the Zimbabwean way. Zimbabwe’s farms and food that is grown here are different from other countries, therefore, we also want our own cultural food to be known out there.”
Ndlovu said there was a huge gap on the internet pertaining Zimbabwean culture and food, adding that the From Farm to Plate photography competition would help in bridging that gap, highlighting that there is a need to conserve and preserve Zimbabwe’s traditional food on the internet.
Bulawayo WikiLovesAfrica2025 organiser Babongile Sibanda said there were many untold stories relating to food tradition in Zimbabwe and the initiative will help to reveal those.
“We are trying to fill information gaps relating to food in Zimbabwe in the Wiki space and also on the internet,” Ndlovu said.
