Kwaito fanatic pushes genre into Zim

A ZIMBABWEAN kwaito fanatic has cemented his love for the genre by channelling it into the country from South Africa.

A ZIMBABWEAN kwaito fanatic has cemented his love for the genre by channelling it into the country from South Africa.

Danile ‘Kelz’ Mabone has revealed that he is managing a South African kwaito artiste, Neo Cavin Sekele, aka NeoZAR, in a bid to unearth hidden kwaito gems in the country.

“Digitalisation has made it easy for managers and artistes from different countries to connect. So from our interactions on Instagram we connected, I believe in his sound and he believes in my vision,” Mabone said.

Mabone said he aimed at bringing the kwaito feel so that up-and-coming artistes in Zimbabwe could consider the genre as he had not come across any so far.

“Locally, I have not seen kwaito artistes, but it would be interesting to see through NeoZAR what hidden gems in the country we can unearth,” he added.

Under Mabone’s management, Sekele got approval from genre’s legends such as Christos after releasing two extended plays (EPs) named Luv Boiz Vol 1&2. Each EP has five songs.

Sekele said he was looking forward to expanding his music and  brand.

“The relationship I have with my manager helps me to expand my music and create more networks for my brand, making sure that my sound is understood and treated as a heritage sound in the ghettos we come from,” said Sekele.

The team revealed its plan to network through the southern region and have a performance in Zimbabwe sometime this year.

“Mabone noticed my sound and played a great role with preparing a foundation for my brand. We started working together in 2023; the plan was to build a catalogue before going mainstream,” said Sekele.

He added: “This year we are focusing on performances in Africa, Sadc, since we have a strong catalogue and a niche fan base.”

NeoZAR began his singing career in 2022 and has collaborated with renowned South African artistes like Vinny da vince and Tim White (owner of House Africa), leading to signing a distribution deal with The orchard, a Sony entity.
