AN array of jazz artistes has joined hands to use music to fight violence against women with a potentially explosive concert set for November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
The concert set for Theatre in the Park in Harare Gardens will feature various performances with Thabo “Thabone” Masilela from South Africa expected to perform as the guest artiste.
In an interview with NewsDay Life & Style, the concert organiser Leon Jalasi said jazz artistes would preach messages of love, hope and inspiration at the show.
“The concert is meant to stand with women who were victims of violence and women who are still victims of violence at the hands of men. So, with this concert we want to send a message of love, hope, comfort, inspiration and support to make it known to women that we are backing them by advocating against violence against women,” he noted.
“Women are not the only ones who are victims of violence in society. Apart from performances, the concert will feature screenings of testimonies from the gender based violence (GBV) survivors.”
He said performances at the show would be centred on topical issues affecting marriages.
“Several marriages are marred by violence which emanate from issues such as infidelity. The songs shall speak against GBV encouraging unconditional love in couples,” he said. “With this playlist, the artistes seek to soothe the soul of the audience and give the message of hope.”
Among the artistes to perform at the concert are Evans Mapfumo, Daisy Zigode, Vazukuru VeAfrica and dancers from the International Youth Fellowship.
