HARARE –All across Africa it is a general understand among scholar, academics and the media that the continent’s story is yet to be effectively given to the world let alone the Africans themselves.
The situation is equally disastrous for individual countries whose narrative is still anchored on history written by the former colonial masters who still peddle their word against the Africans.
But the situation is not expected to sustain with more Africans push the African narrative to the outside world as they seek to give people the true story of Africa.
For Equatorial Guinea-based entrepreneur, journalist, media and communication expert Milagrosa Ada Micha, the journey is not easy but starting it is most important endeavour for the African story to be told by Africans themselves.
Micha this year celebrates a decade of transformation, energy, resolve, determination and vigour to push the narrative associated with Equatorial Guinea.
In 2015, a fresh-faced college student studying in China started the Real Equatorial Guinea, an information organ that collects in its entirety the political, social, economic and religious activities in her country.
The magazine functions as a platform of the socio-political, economic and cultural reality of the government to other continents, since it is written in three languages: Spanish, English and Mandarin Chinese.
The Real Equatorial Guinea can be purchased in different parts of the national geography, as well as in the embassies of Equatorial Guinea in different European, American, Asian and African countries, and it is published bimonthly.

In an interview ahead of the commemorations, Micha shared her journey which started during her second year at college in China leading to the magazine being one of the most sort after platform to understand Equatorial Guinea, its leadership and government policies.
“I created my magazine when I was in the second year of university in China, after noticing that my origin (my country)was very unknown, in my university no one knew my country, they thought that I am Latina or from some part of white Africa, and every time we went on the internet to show them my country we found negative information.
“In view of this situation I had created a magazine that I was editing in three languages, English, Chinese and Spanish so that everyone could inform themselves about my country in a good way, make their culture and all the good things it had known, counteracting the negative accents towards the country.
“ My magazine focuses on everything but gossip and celebrity world... that is, political information, economy, culture, sports, health, science etc and our biggest readers at the level of our country are high personalities such as members of the government, diplomats etc.”
According to Micha, the journey was not smooth-sailing after facing several challenges in the male dominated media industry which is also facing vicious threats from social media and other competitors.
“I have faced several challenges such as being able to collect information about my country from China, moving from the printed version to the digital version, although we continue to maintain the digital version. I have overcome those challenges through resistance, persistence and insistence; this is how I can summarize these 10 years,” she said.
Micha, a confident speaker of three international language, also revealed her passion for journalism and information, she was born with and would want to develop further.
“The advice I would give to women who want to publish their own magazine would be to move forward with their ideas and dreams and never give up, women by nature have great potential and should never lower their guard or feel weak due to a lack of resources or support, women can achieve everything they set out to do.
“The African media landscape is good for women to start projects like your magazine because it expands to a fairly wide world where you can create more things for the sustainable development of nations in this section,” she said.
The affable Micha believes the challenges being faced by the traditional media especially from the Artificial Intelligence-powered social media would be gone.
“The media landscape survives in this era of social networks by maintaining real and truthful information, because many times social networks instil hoaxes, lies and it is the difference with serious media with the new era of artificial intelligence, which helps professionals in the world of information to be more professional,” she said.
Micha also harbours serious ambitions to take her product to the international level.
“My plans for the next 10 years are to have a true international resonance with a great television channel that presents diversity of content,” she said confidently declares.
