‘Renewable energy conference now regional flagship platform’

Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) chief executive officer, Kenias Mafukidze

VICTORIA FALLS Apr. 9 (NewsDay Live) - Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) chief executive officer, Kenias Mafukidze, says the International Renewable Energy Conference and Expo (IRECE) has become a flagship platform driving sustainable energy policy, interventions, and investments in Zimbabwe.

Speaking at the 6th edition of IRECE on Wednesday, Mafukidze said the platform has played a pivotal role in driving change, attracting investment, and reshaping the narrative surrounding renewable energy in the country.

“One might ask why a media house like us is involved in this niche," Mafukidze said.

"The answer is simple: we are committed to showcasing the talents within our community and supporting one another.

"The energy conference is not just about energy; it is about humanity.

"We recognise that everything we engage in now is essential for the well-being of future generations.

“We are thrilled to welcome you all today, including members of the diplomatic corps, as we gather for the 6th International Renewable Energy Conference—now recognised as a major platform driving sustainable transitions in our communities." Over the years, IRECE has grown from a local initiative to a globally acknowledged event, overcoming challenges like Covid-19 and showcasing remarkable resilience.”

Mafukidze pointed out that the involvement of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who serves as the patron of the conference, has been instrumental in catalyzing policy change and investment in Zimbabwe’s energy sector.

“Three years ago, President Mnangagwa attended the conference, pledged his support, and became our patron," he said

" His leadership has spurred tangible outcomes, policy innovation, and significant investment in our energy sector.

" We’ve seen incredible digital collaborations with countries like Angola, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Nigeria, Egypt, Botswana, and international partners such as Germany, France, China, the US, and the UK.

“We are not just discussing the future of energy; we are actively shaping it. "This conference marks a celebration of our progress and solutions. We sincerely appreciate the support of key stakeholders, including the Office of the President, our speakers, panelists, sponsors, and organisers. This event has truly become a catalyst for tangible change and policy innovation.”

In his address at the conference, AMH editor-in-chief Kholwani Nyathi emphasised the group’s significant role in advancing conversations around renewable energy by consistently reporting on key issues facing Zimbabwe and the broader region.

“We are excited to once again gather as advocates for a sustainable future to discuss how we can help usher in a cleaner, more equitable energy future," Nyathi  said.

"The Standard has played a critical role in pushing forward the renewable energy dialogue by consistently covering key issues affecting our country and region."

The Standard, he added, had been instrumental in driving change through the impactful stories published across its platforms.

“Our unwavering commitment to reporting the truth, along with the dedication of our esteemed sponsors, has brought together both local and international stakeholders to discuss strategies for transforming Zimbabwe’s energy sector," he said.

"Over the last six years, we’ve worked to uncover the truth, empower citizens, and strengthen communities.

The stories we tell, the investigations we conduct, and the issues we highlight extend far beyond the pages of our newspapers and digital platforms,” he said.

“These stories are catalysts for change. We don’t just report the news; we shape the important conversations that affect our society, sparking dialogue that influences public opinion and drives accountability. In today’s rapidly evolving media landscape, our journalism transcends traditional boundaries, engaging audiences not only across Zimbabwe but globally.”

Nyathi stressed the crucial role the media plays in counteracting misinformation, providing a reliable stream of information to the public.

“Through our journalism, we provide a vital resource of information in an age increasingly dominated by misinformation. We have the power to influence and inform like never before. As champions of traditional journalism, we will continue to push boundaries, uphold ethical standards, and foster innovation,” he said.

IRECE, he said, highlighted AMH’s belief in the potential of renewable energy value chains to offer solutions for increasing energy access, ensuring supply security, reducing emissions, and promoting sustainable development.

“These efforts have already made significant strides in improving social development across the country.”
