Munetsi eyeing more goals for Wolves

Munetsi, who contributed two goals last season including a memorable stunner on the final day, admitted he had chances to score more.

ZIMBABWEAN international and Wolverhampton Wanderers star Marshall Munetsi is embracing his dynamic role as a box-to-box midfielder, a position he excelled in after joining the club in January.

While he has become a crucial cog in the team’s engine room, the Warriors’ enforcer is keen to add more goals to his tally for the upcoming English Premier League season.

Munetsi, who contributed two goals last season including a memorable stunner on the final day, admitted he had chances to score more.

Speaking on the club’s official podcast, he shed light on the manager’s vision for him.

“There were certain aspects the manager wanted me to do to help the team, considering they had seen me from afar, and one of them was my qualities of being a box-to-box midfielder and being able to defend and to also attack,” Munetsi explained.

“I would have loved to have scored more goals with the chances I had, but unfortunately sometimes in football things don’t always work out the way you want.”

Despite this, Munetsi believes he has significantly contributed to the team’s overall solidity, particularly without the ball.

“But, in general, I have been able to add more value to the team, especially without the ball, how our shape has become more solid, because we had been conceding a lot of goals and also assisting when we attack,” he added.

“Overall, we managed to find a good way to integrate each and every player in the system we were using.”

Munetsi was among the first group of first-team players to return for pre-season training in Portugal, eager to work further with coach Vitor Pereira and his staff.

The team will be looking to build on their late surge in form last season, which saw them escape a relegation dogfight after spending most of the campaign battling at the wrong end of the table.

Looking ahead to the new campaign, Munetsi highlighted the importance of adaptability within the squad.

“I think he (manager Pereira) wanted players who can adjust and adapt because games don’t always go as planned and sometimes the manager will tell you to go on the right, go central, go in behind,” he said.

“It shows the quality, not only for me, but also for a lot of the players, like Joao (Gomes), (Jean-Ricner) Bellegarde, we always integrate those positions to try and find ways to break down opponents.”

The midfielder reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the club, a philosophy he has held since childhood.

“I have always said as long as I’m breathing, I will always give everything for the club. This is the mentality I have had since I was a kid. When people bring you to do a job, you want to do it to the best of your abilities and I think having that workrate is one of my qualities,” the Warriors international said.

“I always want to run as much as I can to make sure we win games, and it’s fun when you also have people appreciate whatever you are doing.

“At the end of the day, it’s more important to get good results, but those results only come after sacrificing blood, sweat and tears on the pitch.”

Wolves face a challenging start to the new season, kicking off their campaign with a tough home fixture against former champions Manchester City on August 16.
