Kwekwe police bust 53 drug bases

OVER 100 suspects have been arrested and 53 drug bases destroyed in Kwekwe, the Midlands province, as part of the ongoing national campaign against drug and substance abuse.

OVER 100 suspects have been arrested and 53 drug bases destroyed in Kwekwe, the Midlands province, as part of the ongoing national campaign against drug and substance abuse.

Police confiscated large quantities of illegal substances including dagga and illicit beverages during the operation, which is being conducted in urban and peri-urban areas of Kwekwe.

Officer-in-Charge for Kwekwe district, Inspector Ison Chapeta, said the operation would continue until communities were drug free.

“We have arrested over 100 people so far in connection with drug-related crimes,” Chapeta said.

“Some of the suspects were found in possession of dagga, while others were caught with illegal beverages.

“During these raids, we recovered 60 kilogrammes of dagga, which is a clear indication of the scale of the problem we are dealing with.”

He highlighted the importance of community engagement and awareness campaigns in combating drug abuse.

“We are calling on residents to co-operate with us in this fight,” Chapeta said.

“Drug abuse is destroying our future generations, and it is only through a united front that we can eliminate this scourge from our society.”

Police, in collaboration with other stakeholders, are also conducting educational outreach programmes about the dangers of drug use.

Government has declared war on drugs through a multi-sectoral approach involving law enforcement, education, and public health initiatives under the National Drug Abuse Elimination Strategy.

Authorities in Kwekwe say the current operations are just the beginning and more raids will be carried out in the coming weeks to ensure all drug syndicates are dismantled.

“We will not rest until Kwekwe is free from the grip of drug dealers,” Chapeta said.
