THE Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) has officially declared Zanu PF’s Marondera ward 9 by election candidate, Charles Nyamundanda, duly elected councillor after his sole rival, Alice Machingauta of the MDC-T, withdrew from the race.
Zanu PF has capitalised on the instability within the opposition parties, securing multiple wards across the country unopposed.
In a statement issued by Zec chief elections officer Simbarashe Tongayi, the election body confirmed of the uncontested appointment of Nyamundada as the councillor in Marondera Urban.
“It is hereby notified in terms of section 126 (2) of the Electoral Act [Chapter 2:13], that Machingauta Alice of MDC-T, nominated for election in the Ward 9 of Marondera Municipality by-election scheduled for the September 13, 2025, has withdrawn her candidature,” he noted.
“It is further advised that since only one candidate remains duly nominated, Nyamundanda Charles Ndawona of Zanu PF is hereby declared duly elected councillor for the said ward with immediate effect from August 20, 2025."
Political analysts say the ruling party’s increasing dominance in local authorities could shift service delivery priorities and weaken local checks on central government influence.
The Marondera Urban seat was left vacant following the death of CCC’s councillor Gersham Muponda.
