Coltart applauds Rotarians in Zim

BULAWAYO mayor David Coltart

BULAWAYO mayor David Coltart has called on Rotarians in Zimbabwe to be the salt of the nation and save the country from moral decay.

He made the remarks during the Rotary Club of Bulawayo presidential induction dinner at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair recently.

The Rotary Club is a non-partisan organisation based on four guiding principles that can lead the nation to peace and ensure goodwill for all citizens.

“The four way test was created in 1932. These four principles raise profound questions and they provide our nation with the guide which we are desperately in need of,” Coltart said.

“Those of you who are lawyers know how our justice system has been terribly undermined that we do not place value in truth right across our nation and you play an important role on being a non-partisan organisation and that gives me an opportunity to restate how critically important truth is in building any city or nation.”

He said Rotarians had a unique advantage in being non-partisan and play a unique role in building our nation.

“Where there is no truth the moral fabric of the country is destroyed and ultimately the country itself is destroyed,” the Bulawayo mayor said.

“I urge you to maintain the highest standards regarding truth and where you see untruths in business practices, you speak out not in a partisan way, but in defence of these principles which we know are correct.”

Coltart underscored the need to focus on policies that benefit the majority rather than concentrating on things that benefit the minority.

“I am told that you have certain areas of focus such as promoting peace, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation,” he said.

“Maternal and child health, basic education, community development and environmental protection and as I reflect on those I am reminded on how your ideals and objectives are so important as we seek to run the city and the nation, my goodness we need peace in our nation and in the world.”

Meanwhile, five Rotary Club presidents inducted at the function include Nonhlanhla Mguni (Bulawayo South) Marlvin Bill (Belmont), Alex Mandovha (Sunrise), Gladys Bugalo(Bulawayo) and Bongiwe Ngwenya of Matopos Rotary Club.

Rotary clubs bring together people across generations who wish to create lasting change in the world, in their communities and in themselves.
