Gender policy gets thumbs up

Economic Justice for Women Project

THE Economic Justice for Women Project (EJWP) says the newly-approved gender policy lays a foundation to address entrenched gender disparities.

Cabinet recently adopted a new National Gender Policy to remove stereotypes and prejudices, institutionalise gender mainstreaming and advance gender equality and women’s empowerment, among others.

EJWP director Margaret Mutsamvi said Cabinet’s approval of the policy was a significant milestone in Zimbabwe’s journey towards gender equality and women’s empowerment.

“As EJWP, we are committed to the monitoring of the policy’s full implementation particularly issues of inclusive economies,” she said.

In March this year, EJWP filed an urgent petition for the renewal of the National Gender Policy, which had lapsed in 2021.

“We are proud to have played a central role in advocating for the timely reinstatement of this critical policy framework,” Mutsamvi said.

“Our efforts, alongside those of our Community Action Hubs, were driven by the urgency to safeguard and advance the rights and dignity of women and girls across the country.”

Mutsamvi said EJWP was committed to supporting the full implementation of the policy, particularly around inclusive economic empowerment and accountability in public resource management.

“We will continue to monitor progress, engage duty bearers and amplify the voices of women, especially those in marginalised and economically-excluded communities.”

The policy identifies and prioritises 10 goals, which include legal, justice and constitutional rights, gender balanced leadership and decision-making, equitable and inclusive economic empowerment as well as equal access to clean and sustainable energy, among others.

“Each goal is underpinned by a situational analysis of existing gender issues and gaps, the objective to be attained and the strategies to promote attainment,” the EJWP director said.

“The priority areas are considered as catalysts in the achievement of gender equity and women empowerment.”
