One feared dead as boat capsizes at Lake Kariba

The capsized boat has been recovered, and investigations are underway to determine the cause of the accident.

KARIBA, March 12, (NewsDay Live) - One person is feared dead after a boat capsized on Lake Kariba last night. The fishermen's vessel, believed to be carrying two people, was hit by a fierce storm while en route to Kariba urban.

Saul Matsvaire, a fisherman operating at Lake Kariba, said the two were coming from local fishing camps when the incident happened.

"It's sad that we continue losing lives from water-related accidents," said Matsvaire.

According to eyewitnesses, the survivor managed to cling to refrigerators that fell into the water after the boat capsized.

In recent years, there have been several reported cases of boats capsizing, resulting in loss of lives and property.

The causes of these incidents vary, but most are attributed to storms, overloading, and poor maintenance of boats. The authorities have repeatedly warned boat operators and users to exercise caution when navigating the lake, especially during the rainy season.

A search and rescue operation was expected to resume this morning to locate the missing person.

The capsized boat has been recovered, and investigations are underway to determine the cause of the accident.
