
HARARE, Feb 26 (NewsDayLive)– A 27-year-old Latvian man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for attempting to smuggle 8,35kg of heroin through the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.
In an update Wednesday, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe said the Latvian national, Vitalis Kudrjasovs was intercepted at the Robert Mugabe International Airport on September 22, 2022, while en route to India on an Ethiopian Airlines flight.
“After successfully clearing customs formalities and checking his luggage, airport security personnel noticed suspicious contents in his two bags during a routine scan," the prosecution said.
A subsequent search in Kudrjasovs' presence revealed four packages containing 8.35kg of heroin concealed within hidden compartments.
A Harare magistrate who presided over the matter ordered Kudrjasovs to pay a US$5 000 fine on top of his jail term.
