African Union Special Envoy on Youth Cleopatra Mpemba has arrived in Zimbabwe for a Young Women Empowerment Event in collaboration with the African Union (AU) and Go Getter Movement.
Taking place in Harare today, the event aims to empower young women, foster sub-regional sharing of best practices, and nurture the next generation of leaders.
Supported by the World Bank Group, AU Youth Envoy, Mpemba has spearheaded support for a series of transformative engagements across Africa, partnering with grassroots and youth-led organisations from Ethiopia to Ghana, and now Zimbabwe.
“This initiative reflects my unwavering commitment to the socioeconomic development of young women as future leaders,” she said.
“As I have emphasized across the continent, we, the young people, are the leaders of today. I am here to support, empower, and uplift our young women and youth-led organisations .”
Her visit underscores her gratitude to Zimbabwean youth, young women, and the government for their steadfast support during her trailblazing tenure as the youngest member of the African Union Chairperson’s cabinet.
Known for her groundbreaking contributions to youth, gender, and women’s empowerment, Mpemba has emerged as a prominent Pan-African leader.

In addition to her role as Mpemba was recently appointed Co-Chair of the World Health Organization’s Social Connection Commission alongside U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy. She also serves as a member of UNICEF’s Global Leadership Council for Generation Unlimited, further cementing her influence on global youth and gender advocacy.
As her term concludes early next year, Mpemba leaves behind an enduring legacy, including the institutionalisation of the Office of the Youth Envoy and the successful adoption of the African Youth Charter by several nations.
This collaboration with the Go Getter Movement marks a pivotal step towards strengthening youth leadership and advancing gender equality in Zimbabwe and beyond.
