A 26-YEAR-OLD member of the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) on Thursday appeared before Harare magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa accused of raping a woman who had visited his shrine for spiritual assistance.
The accused, George Goromondo, was, however, freed on US$200 bail and will return to court on July 8 for possible trial date allocation pending finalisation of investigations.
According to court papers, sometime last month, the complainant (name withheld for professional reasons) went to Goromondo’s shrine in Dzivaresekwa, Harare, to seek spiritual deliverance.
The accused allegedly told the complainant to come at around 6pm with a clay pot, rice, a white cloth and clay soil.
The complainant returned and Goromondo dismissed other women who were at the shrine.
The accused allegedly prepared the anointing syrup and applied it on the complainant.
After the cleansing act, he offered to escort the complainant home and she agreed.
The court heard that along the way, Goromondo stopped his vehicle and demanded sex from the complainant who refused.

Goromondo then produced an identity card showing that he was a member of the spy agency before raping her.
After the act, Goromondo threatened the complainant not to reveal the matter to anyone.
The accused then told the complainant to come for more prayers the following day.
The matter came to light when the complainant narrated the circumstances to her grandmother, who escorted her to the police, leading to the accused’s arrest.
