Satellite broadcaster Azam TV is in talks to secure broadcasting rights for live Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League (PSL) matches, a move aimed at deepening its coverage of Zimbabwean-focused content, the company’s technical services manager, Munyaradzi Kapfudza, has said.
Speaking on Friday at a subscriber prize-giving ceremony in Harare, Kapfudza revealed that Azam is working closely with PSL administrators to finalise arrangements for airing live matches, mirroring its successful model in Tanzania.
“We beam live league matches in Tanzania and we are committed to doing the same here once approval has been secured. For now, PSL games are available on channels like ZBC,” he said.
Azam’s push for PSL broadcasting follows its success in securing rights for the 2024/25 Caf Champions League, offering live matches and highlights on its free-to-air network and AzamTV Max app.
The move could challenge existing providers like SuperSport, the PSL’s largest TV partner and elevate soccer coverage for Zimbabwean fans.
The Tanzania-based broadcaster has incorporated local stations, including Bulawayo’s Keyona TV, which is exclusive to Azam and the government-owned Transmedia decoder.
“We have most local stations on our platform, ensuring content that resonates with Zimbabwean audiences,” Kapfudza added.
In a bid to expand its reach, Azam has partnered Mashonaland Central’s Madziva FM, targeting listeners in Mt Darwin, Matepatepa and parts of Bindura. The company rewarded over 100 loyal subscribers with prizes, including television sets, refrigerators, motorcycles and cash, at the Harare event.
